As part of the protocol signed between Ege University and the General Directorate of Forestry, the first saplings for the "Ege University 100th Anniversary Memorial Forest" were planted on "December 5th World Soil Day." Ege University ranked among the "100 Greenest Universities in the World." |
The results of the 2023 UI GreenMetric Ranking, which evaluates sustainability efforts and the proportion of green spaces on university campuses worldwide, have been announced. Ege University once again ranked among the world's greenest universities this year. Ege University shot up twelve spots to 96th among 183 universities globally. It ranked 4th among public universities in Türkiye and secured the top position in the Aegean Region, becoming the greenest and most sustainable university in the region. Preparations have begun for the design of a technology-supported educational program aimed at addressing climate change with the TECCHED (Designing of Technology-Supported Climate Change Education Curriculum) Project. The international TECCHED project, supported by the European Union, includes Ege University and Bitlis Eren University from Türkiye, along with partakers from Bulgaria (Ruse University), Latvia (Liepaja University), Lithuania (Vytautas Magnus University), Spain (EOLAS), and Belgium (EUROGEO). Ege University continues to participate in projects aimed at creating a sustainable environmental ecosystem. In the "SolarHub" project, partnered by the Ege University Solar Energy Institute, a roadmap will be developed to promote the use of solar energy in agricultural practices. Funded under the Horizon Europe Widening Participation and Strengthening the ERA Excellence Hubs Call, the "Greek-Turkish Solar Energy Excellence Hub for Advancing the European Green Deal: SolarHub" project aims to synergistically strengthen the solar energy innovation ecosystems of Greece and Türkiye to support the Clean Energy Transition and the Green Deal. "Clean Sea, Clean World" symposium |
Ege University (EÜ) Faculty of Science and the Ege University Environmental Issues Application and Research Center (ÇEVMER) jointly organized an online symposium titled "Clean Sea, Clean World" as part of the "June 5th World Environment Day" events. The symposium was moderated by Prof. Dr. Melike Bor, with the opening speech delivered by ÇEVMER Director Prof. Dr. Armağan Kınal. Speakers included Şermin Gür, Administrative and Technical Supervisor of İZSU Wastewater Treatment Department, and Emre Eser, Environmental and Sustainability Officer at Viessmann Company. |

Ege University's "Zero Waste" initiatives |
As part of the "Zero Waste" Project initiated by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, Ege University, selected as a pilot university, has saved 4,236 trees through paper recycling. Additionally, recycling of packaging waste has prevented the emission of 46,200 kilograms of greenhouse gases and gained 712 cubic meters of storage space. The initiatives also resulted in a saving of 21 kilograms of raw materials and 330 barrels of oil. Furthermore, a total energy savings of 1,146,408 kilowatt-hours has been achieved. |

Türkiye National Risk Shield Model Meeting |
The third meeting of the Türkiye National Risk Shield Model, aimed at making cities in Türkiye more prepared for disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and droughts, was held in Istanbul. The meeting, coordinated by the Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, Murat Kurum, was attended by Ege University Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Budak, who was selected as a member of the Urban and Rural Infrastructure Board. Following the meeting, where scientists presented field studies and reports related to the process, a series of decisions were made. The results and applications reached were summarized in 26 points and shared with the public. |

International collaborative projects initiated by Ege University academics continue to gain recognition from TÜBİTAK. The project titled "Electrochemical Green Hydrogen and Oxygen Production," led by Prof. Dr. Şule Erten Ela from the Ege University Solar Energy Institute, is one of the three projects supported under the call for proposals established within the framework of cooperation between TÜBİTAK and the National Research Council of Italy (CNR). The project titled "Plasma-Modified Wool-Based Activated Carbon Fibers for Capturing Carbon Dioxide," led by Prof. Dr. Ahmet Çay from the Department of Textile Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, has been deemed eligible for support under the TÜBİTAK 1001 program. "Design and Evaluation of Innovative MOF-Silica Aerogel Composites for Capturing CO2 from Dilute Streams" Project |
The project led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nilay Gizli from the Department of Chemical Engineering at Ege University aims to develop a filter that captures and traps carbon dioxide from gases produced after combustion before they are released into the atmosphere. The project has been granted support under the TÜBİTAK-Iran (MSRT-NIMAD) Bilateral Cooperation Program. March 16, 2023. |

As part of the "Sustainable and Climate-Friendly Campus" project at Ege University, "Mobile Waste Collection Centers" have been installed at various locations on the campus. The waste centers, located at the campus metro entrance, the Faculty of Dentistry, and the Faculty of Medicine, include units for paper, glass, plastic, metal, electronic waste, used oil, and batteries. "Green Transformation and Sustainability in the Leather Industry: Development of an Eco-Friendly Production System and Methods that Reduce Water and Chemical Use Under Vacuum" Project |
With the systems and production methods to be developed in the project, it will be possible to reduce water usage in leather production by up to 70% compared to traditional methods, and chemical use by up to 50%. The project, which is closely followed by the leather sector, aims to provide an eco-friendly production process that minimizes pollution load and volume while significantly alleviating economic burdens when implemented. |

Sustainable and Climate-Friendly Campus Project Meeting |
The "Sustainable and Climate-Friendly Campus Project Pilot Universities Meeting" was held in Konya under the chairmanship of President of the Higher Education Council (YÖK) Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar. Hosted by Selçuk University, the meeting was attended by Hasan Suver, Deputy Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change; Prof. Dr. Cevahir Uzkurt, Vice President of YÖK; Prof. Dr. Naci Gündoğan, a member of the YÖK Executive Board; Prof. Dr. Necdet Budak, Rector of Ege University; the rectors of the pilot universities involved in the project; and representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources. The meeting discussed the current status of the 11 selected pilot universities in the areas of zero waste, energy efficiency, and renewable energy sources, as well as the contributions of the ministries in these fields. Additionally, a roadmap for the upcoming period to achieve the Sustainable and Climate-Friendly Campus goal was established. |
