Water Reuse
Ege University pays attention to water harvesting and prioritizes using water-saving tools. In this scope, more than one study is being carried out, and more and more are being improved every day.
Ege University Prof. Dr. Sermed AKGÜN Indoor Olympic Swimming Pool is an Olympic-standard, 50 meters long, 21 meters wide, and 3660 m3 water capacity pool. The pool water is completely treated daily with a sand filtration system for 12 hours and then disinfected. The pool is refilled and reused in an infinite loop with this cleaned water, and in this way, we save 1,335,900m3 of freshwater annually and protect freshwater resources. Water analyses of Prof. Dr. Sermed AKGÜN Indoor Olympic Swimming Pool are performed at least thrice a day to monitor pool water quality. In addition, water samples are sent to institutions authorized by the Ministry of Health monthly, and the Ministry of Health inspects the results in accordance with the Regulation on the Principles and Conditions of Swimming Pool.
With the İZKA project, which also includes establishing systems that will harvest roof water to store rainwater and make it usable, garden and tree irrigation works are planned in the first stage. The amount of water harvest that can be obtained from the measurements and roofs of the spaces determined in the project was calculated as approximately 165 thousand m3. It appears that the planned water harvest will more than meet the amount of water needed for irrigation.
2 tanks with total 40 tons capacity are used for irrigation by harvesting the rain water flowing from the roofs in our university.
Method:
- The rain water potential collected on the roof of Ege University Faculty of Pharmacy is determined.
- Considering the determined potential water amount, the transmission line between the existing tank in the faculty garden and the roof is designed.
- The tank where the rain water is collected and the irrigation system that distributes it to the garden are integrated and the assembly is completed.
